Dr. Dwijendra Lal Mallick

Director/Fellow

Dr. Mallick has been a part of Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS) for over 18 years. With a background in Sociology and Ph. D in Anthropology, his field of expertise is in implementation of research projects on natural resources management, climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction, policy and institutional analysis, poverty alleviation and livelihood promotion, agricultural development, market promotion, stakeholder analysis and consensus building and institutional and capacity building and empowerment of the poor local capacity and partnership building and climate change adaptation. At BCAS, he is heading the Publication and Communication Division and is an editor of the Environmental Newsletters of BCAS and contributes articles to leading international and local papers.

His has also participated in several international and regional trainings, seminars and workshops on development, poverty, livelihood and environment issues, his most recent participation in the Rio+20 conference at Rio De Jenerio, Mexico. He has also worked with the UK Department for International Development (DFID), UNDP, European Commission, DGIS, Danish Embassy, World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) of the GoB, Department of Environment, Department of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) and the Ministry of Agriculture, LGED, LGRD, Ministry of Water Resources and Ministry of Rural Development of the GoB,  Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC), NGO Forum for DWSS, Grameen Trust, Oxfam GB, Bread for the World and DRRS Bangladesh.

Dr. Mallick has furthermore worked with Lamans from Greece, Orbicon from Denmark, CEDEM at the University of Western Brittany in France, CEMARE at the University of Ports Mouth, IDS at the University of Sussex, SEI of the University of York and IIED in the UK.

He is a member of a number of organizations like, the Executive Committee of Bangladesh Social Sciences Research Society - a Network of the social researchers and development practitioners, Joint Convener of the Biodiversity Working Group of the Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon (BAPA), a voluntary organization of citizens to protect environment and conservation of natural resources in Bangladesh, and POPOLO– a young researchers group working on Population and Development in Bangladesh.

  • Dr. Mallick contributed a chapter to a book on Water Communities, published from the Kyoto University, Japan. His chapter entitled, Amplifying the Community Voices for greater Access to Drinking Water in Bangladesh;
  • Contributed an article on Fighting Poverty and Climate Change, published in Clime Asia, CANSA Journal, BCAS, Dhaka
  • Author of an article entitled “Global Climate will hit the Poor Hardest”, was published in Bangladesh Environmental Newsletter (BEN) in 2007: BCAS, Dhaka
